Thyroid and Menopause

When it comes to the Thyroid, most doctors will test for TSH (Thyroid Stimulating Hormone), which is produced in the Pituitary Gland to the Thyroid Gland to produce T4 & some T3,    T4 is an inactive hormone which is converted into T3 to create active metabolism. To get a true picture of how your thyroid function is, we really need to be testing for T3, T4, Thyroid antibodies, Reverse T3, Iodine. This is because T4 is an inactive hormone which is converted into T3 to create active metabolism.

Your thyroid gland uses Iodine from foods you eat to make two main hormones  Triiodothyronine (T3)  and Thyroxine (T4) (amino acid) which if your not converting inactive T4 to active T3 you will be producing reverse T3.  If we are lacking in Iodine or Protein your thyroid will struggle to produce active thyroid hormones.

Reverse T3  (mirror image of T3 ) will block up the receptors to prevent active T3 for active metabolism

Co-factors …..   Zinc, B6, Vit D, Iron Chromin, Selenium  are all very important to convert inactive T4  to active T3

If you body is under stress and have impaired liver function, which can be caused through chemical exposure (even the chemicals we clean our homes with), toxins and heavy metals, these substances act like a poison to our thyroid.  If you are of a heaver build and have a slower metabolism, your body will take longer to disgard itself of these toxic substances, which in turn may cause your thyroid to slow or shut down. Hypothyroidism, (an under active thyroid, not producing enough thyroxine).

During menopause, because how hormones are all over the place, it’s not uncommon for a women who dose not  have Hypothyroidism before menopause to develop it through menopause, this is why we need to be tested for the whole picture.  Medicare will cover the cost of TSH tests but you will need to check on the other testing outlays, But remember getting all the tests done will give you a complete picture.

Also remember if your adrenals are under stressed, your thyroid will also be under stress.
